Why Choose Solar Batteries & Storage?
Once of the biggest ‘game changers’ to hit the solar market is solar batteries & storage. Battery storage has been around for decades but the technology wasn’t as advanced as it is today nor as widely accepted. However, today, the majority of solar installations have both solar and battery storage capability.
Without battery storage, you may not utilise all of the energy your solar system produces and this excess would be exported back to the grid for a small benefit. Effectively, you would be giving away energy in the daythat you’ve paid for and then taking energy from the grid at night paying retail prices to the energy provider! It doesn’t make sense. However, by storing any excess energy and discharging the energy into your home in the evening, you utilise all of your solar energy production and significantly enhance your energy independence from the grid.
Battery storage FAQs
We sell batteries in units as small as 2.9 kWh up to 15 kWh. But, these can be modular batteries allowing you to ‘stack’ several batteries together. For example, the SMILE-B3 PLUS 5.04 kWh battery be stacked up to 6 units providing 30.24 kWh total capacity.
The depth of discharge from most manufacturers is around 95% so the ‘usable capacity’ is always less than the ‘total capacity’. Batterieswill never fully discharge to prevent damage to the battery cells.
The accurate length of time is calculated in ‘life cycles’ which is one complete discharge and one complete charge. In reality it doesn’t happen like that. A battery may only discharge 20%, then recharge 20%. This would be 1/5 of a cycle. If your battery storage only discharged 1/5 of capacity each day then it would take 5 days before a full cycle. For example, the SMILE-B3 PLUS 5.04 kWh battery has a life cycle of 6,000 which would theoretically last over 20 years being 80% discharged and recharged every day.
However, the life cycles can go significantly passed their warranty period, like most products, and therefore the true reality can never be 100% accurate.
In short, you need enough storage being the lower of
A) Capturing all the excess electricity produced by the solar system in the day
B) Capturing enough excess electricity produced by the solar system in the day to utilise the majority of the usable capacity when discharging into your home at night.
As you can see, there needs to be a balance achieved between the size of the solar system, your energy demands split between day/night, week/weekend, and the requirement for battery storage.
There are many variables to consider such as the size of roof to house a system, space available to house battery storage units, your energy consumption, when you consume energy etc. As an MCS approved Contractor, we follow MCS compliant guidelines using industry accepted software to make an accurate calculation.
Currently, all solar and energy storage installations, including maintenance to existing sites, should be subject to 0% VAT. This should include residential energy storage when installed as a standalone measure. However, retro-fitting battery storage is subject to 20% VAT.
Currently up to 31 March 2027, all residential Solar PV with or without Battery storage, including maintenance to existing sites, should be subject to 0% VAT as part of the Government’s latest guidance: Energy-saving materials and heating equipment (VAT Notice 708/6) – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
